Review: KJV King James Study Bible, Full-Color Edition (Thomas Nelson)

As someone who regularly creates Bible study materials and leads weekly study groups, I’ve worked with dozens of study Bibles over the years. The Thomas Nelson King James Study Bible, Full-Color Edition stands out as one of the most comprehensive KJV study resources currently available—and for those committed to the King James translation, it may well be the definitive choice.

Build Quality and Aesthetics

The leathersoft brown cover immediately communicates quality. This is a substantial Bible—heavy enough that you’ll want to use it primarily for dedicated study sessions at home rather than carrying it to church. The binding feels sturdy and built to last through years of regular use. The pages have a satisfying weight to them, thicker than many study Bibles, which reduces bleed-through and makes the reading experience more pleasant. Two ribbon markers (one for each testament) are a practical touch that serious students will appreciate. The gilt edges add a classic elegance.

The full-color presentation throughout is genuinely stunning. The 270 photographs of Holy Land locations, archaeological artifacts, ruins, and classic artwork aren’t mere decoration—they provide meaningful visual context that enhances comprehension. Maps and charts are crisp and readable, integrated naturally throughout the text rather than relegated only to appendices.

Study Resources: The Heart of This Bible

This is where the Thomas Nelson KJV Study Bible truly distinguishes itself. The sheer volume of study material is remarkable:

The 5,700 bottom-of-page study notes offer nearly 400,000 words of commentary developed specifically for the KJV text. For those accustomed to the archaic language of the King James, these notes prove invaluable—difficult words and phrases are explained right where you encounter them, eliminating the need to constantly flip to a concordance. The commentary reflects conservative evangelical scholarship, grounded in a high view of Scripture’s authority.

The 200+ doctrinal notes systematically address ten major theological themes (the Bible, God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, man, sin, salvation, angels, the church, and eschatology). For anyone teaching or leading Bible study, these provide excellent theological guardrails and talking points.

The archaeological notes bring the ancient world to life, connecting Scripture to tangible historical discoveries. The personality profiles offer helpful overviews of biblical figures that can jumpstart character studies.

Unique Indexes and Tools

What sets this Bible apart from competitors are the specialized indexes:

The “Topical Index to Christ and the Gospels” organizes 130 topics across seven categories (teachings, events, miracles, parables, conversations, healings, prophecies). The parallel “Topical Index to Paul and His Letters” does the same for Pauline material. For anyone teaching through the Gospels or Paul’s epistles, these are gold.

The “Topical Index to End Times Prophecy” will particularly appeal to those interested in eschatology, organizing prophetic material into accessible categories.

The concordance includes over 1,000 terms keyed to Strong’s numbering system, with 200+ keywords featuring brief discussions of their theological significance—a feature that bridges the gap between a simple concordance and a full word study resource.

The 32,000 center-column cross-references linking to 73,000+ related passages allow for the kind of Scripture-interprets-Scripture study that serious Bible students value.

Who Should Buy This Bible?

This Bible is ideal for:

  • KJV readers seeking serious study resources developed specifically for this translation
  • Bible study leaders who need reliable, conservative commentary at their fingertips
  • Those who appreciate visual learning and want photographs, maps, and charts integrated with their study
  • Anyone intimidated by the King James language who needs accessible explanations
  • Collectors who value a beautiful, well-crafted Bible

The Thomas Nelson KJV Study Bible represents over 25 years of refinement and remains the gold standard for KJV study resources. At its price point, it offers exceptional value for the depth and breadth of material included. If you’re committed to studying the King James Version and want a single resource that can serve you for years—even decades—this is the one to own.

The Believer’s Creed

I believe in the eternal God—
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—
One in essence, infinite in glory,
the Maker of heaven and earth,
whose wisdom shaped all things seen and unseen.

I believe in Jesus Christ,
the only begotten Son of God,
conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
holy and humble, yet Lord of all.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
He descended into the depths of hell,
and on the third day He rose victorious.
He ascended into heaven,
and now reigns at the right hand of the Father,
from where He will come again
to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the breath and power of God within us,
who gives life, convicts hearts, and sustains faith.
Through the Spirit, the Church is made holy,
a communion of saints across all generations.
I believe in the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting in the presence of God.

I believe in the sacred mystery of the Trinity—
not three gods, but one holy unity:
Father, Son, and Spirit—eternal, unchanging, divine.

I believe in the sacred story revealed in Scripture:
that from the beginning, light has warred against darkness,
and though the enemy rose in pride,
God’s promise prevailed through the Seed—
Christ Jesus, born of a woman,
who triumphed through His cross and empty tomb.

I believe salvation is a gift of grace—
received by faith, sealed by repentance,
and made real through the transforming love of God.

I believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God,
a lamp for our path and truth for every soul.

I believe in the call of baptism—
a burial of the old, a rising to new life in Christ.

I believe the Holy Spirit empowers believers
with gifts of healing, wisdom, and tongues,
that we may glorify God and serve the world in love.

I believe in divine healing,
for the power that raised Christ from the grave
still moves with mercy among His people.

The Believer’s Charge

We believe that we are called and anointed—
not as spectators, but as servants of the living God.
We are His witnesses in all the earth,
ambassadors of reconciliation and bearers of His light.

We believe that Christ has commissioned us
to go into the world and proclaim His gospel,
to speak truth to the lost and hope to the broken,
to open blind eyes and set captives free.
In His name we move without fear,
for the Spirit goes before us with power and signs.

We believe the promise of our Lord:
that these signs will follow those who believe—
we shall cast out demons in His name,
speak with new tongues of heavenly fire,
lay hands upon the sick and see them restored,
tread upon the works of the enemy,
and walk in the authority of the risen Christ.

We believe that the Spirit within us
confirms the Word with power and grace—
that we are vessels of His love,
agents of His mercy,
and temples of His presence.

We choose to live as those sent by God,
our hearts aflame with His gospel,
our hands ready to serve,
our voices lifted in praise,
our lives poured out for His glory.

The Blessed Hope

I believe in the glorious return of Jesus Christ,
who will restore all things
and reign in righteousness and peace.

And I believe in eternal life—
the home prepared for the redeemed,
and the solemn truth of judgment for the unrepentant.

This is our faith, our confession, our calling, and our hope.
To God be the glory—forever and ever.
Amen.
