I have started something new, and I want you to be among the first to see it.
Coffee Chat with Hank is a Bible teaching show on YouTube. The name tells you most of what you need to know. It is me at my desk with a webcam, a cup of coffee, and an open Bible. Each episode is short enough to finish before your cup does. Pour your own, sit down, and give it a few minutes before the day gets loud.
Start Here with Episode 1
Here is the first episode. It runs a little over eight minutes.
The first episode covers the opening two verses of the Sermon on the Mount.
And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:
Matthew 5:1-2, NKJV
Most of us rush past those verses to get to the Beatitudes. I think that is a mistake. Before Jesus says a single word, Matthew shows Him seeing the crowd, going up the mountain, and sitting down, and then His disciples come to Him and He begins to teach. Each of those small actions tells you what kind of sermon you are about to hear.
Going up a mountain to give God’s people His word would have made every Jewish listener think of Moses at Sinai. But the picture breaks in an important place. Moses went up alone while the people stood back in fear. Here the disciples climb up and sit at His feet. Then Jesus sits down. The Greek word is kathizō (καθίζω, G2523), and it is the posture of a rabbi taking his seat to teach with authority.
Before He opens His mouth, He has already preached half the sermon with His body.
The episode also folds in the introduction to the book, so if you plan to walk through the whole sermon with me, this is the place to begin.
The First Series Is Daily Bread
The first run of teachings comes from my book Daily Bread, a 40-day devotional through the Sermon on the Mount. That means forty short teachings through Matthew 5, 6, and 7, one passage at a time. Two new episodes come out each week, so the whole walk takes about twenty weeks. The phrase itself sits right in the middle of the sermon, in the prayer Jesus taught His disciples. Give us this day our daily bread (Matthew 6:11).
I have been reading the Sermon on the Mount for more than thirty years, and it still refuses to be small. Most of us know it well enough to recite pieces of it and not well enough to live it. The Beatitudes hang on walls. The Lord’s Prayer gets mumbled with eyes half open. The narrow gate always seems to be meant for somebody else. So we are going to slow down and take it a passage at a time.
Why I Am Doing This
The name of this site comes from Acts 17. Luke says the Bereans “received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11, NKJV).
That word daily is the whole idea behind this show. Ten minutes a few times a week builds a habit. Habit is how a person comes to know their Bible for themselves instead of knowing it secondhand.
So I want you to do with me what the Bereans did with Paul. Open your own Bible while you watch. Check what I say against the text. If I ever get something wrong, the text wins.
How to Follow Along
New episodes come out twice a week on my YouTube channel. Subscribe there and you will get each one as it posts.
If you would rather read than watch, or you want the passage and the Greek in front of you while you listen, Daily Bread is also available as a book under my H. R. Garner name on Amazon.
Next up is Day 2, Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit, from Matthew 5:3. The first word out of Jesus’ mouth in that sermon is blessed, and that is where we will pick it up.
So pour a cup, open your Bible to Matthew 5, and come up the mountain.
