There is something meaningful about sitting down with your own Bible—turning the pages, underlining a verse, writing a question in the margin, and slowing down long enough to listen.
Technology can help us study Scripture, but it should never distract us from Scripture or try to take its place.
That conviction is at the heart of Passage Lens, a new web-based Bible study companion from Hank’s Bible Study.
Passage Lens is designed to sit beside your physical Bible. It helps you explore the historical, literary, geographical, linguistic, and theological background of a passage while encouraging you to remain rooted in the biblical text itself.

From a Bible Page to a Deeper Study
Passage Lens begins with the way many people already study the Bible.
Open your Bible and begin reading. When you reach a passage you would like to understand more deeply, take a picture of the page with your phone or upload an existing photo.
Passage Lens scans the page and attempts to identify the Scripture reference. You can then narrow the study to the exact verse or passage you want to explore rather than creating a study of the entire photographed page.
You can also enter a Scripture reference manually when you already know what you want to study.
Before generating the study, select the Bible translation you are using:
- New King James Version
- King James Version
- English Standard Version
- New Living Translation
- Christian Standard Bible
- New International Version
- New American Standard Bible
The NKJV is selected by default, but you can change the translation to match the Bible in front of you.
What Passage Lens Helps You Explore
After identifying the passage, Passage Lens creates a structured study that can include several different areas of biblical exploration.
Literary and Biblical Context
A verse can easily be misunderstood when it is separated from the chapter, book, or argument in which it appears. Passage Lens helps explain what happens before and after the selected passage and how it fits within the larger message of the biblical book.
It can also help identify the main idea of a chapter and guide you into a broader topical study of that theme throughout Scripture.
Historical Background
Passage Lens provides helpful information about the people, events, customs, political circumstances, and historical setting surrounding a passage.
This background can help you understand details that would have been familiar to the original audience but may not be immediately apparent to a modern reader.
Theological Context
The application explores how a passage relates to larger biblical themes, such as covenant, redemption, faith, grace, holiness, worship, discipleship, the kingdom of God, and the work of Christ.
The goal is not to isolate a verse as a theological slogan. It is to help readers see how the passage contributes to the unfolding message of the whole Bible.
Word Studies
Important biblical words can carry shades of meaning that are difficult to communicate fully in English.
Passage Lens can identify significant Hebrew or Greek terms and explain how they function in the passage. It may also show where related words appear elsewhere in Scripture.
Word studies are presented as interpretive aids—not as shortcuts that override grammar, context, or responsible biblical interpretation.
Cross-References and Personal Theme Connections
Passage Lens suggests other passages that may help illuminate the selected text. These connections can lead to a broader understanding of a theme as it develops throughout the Bible.
As you save more studies, the application can also help you discover connections between the passage you are currently reading and themes you have encountered during previous studies.
Maps and Timelines
Biblical events happened in real places and at real moments in history.
Interactive maps can help you visualize important locations, journeys, regions, and geographical relationships connected to a passage. Timelines can place events, people, kingdoms, and periods into a clearer historical sequence.
Translation Comparison
When helpful, Passage Lens can assist you in comparing how different Bible translations express a verse.
Translation comparison is not intended to declare one translation the automatic winner. Instead, it can draw attention to meaningful differences in wording and help you recognize places where further study may be valuable.
Evidence View
Because AI-generated material should be examined carefully, Passage Lens includes an evidence-focused approach that helps distinguish biblical observations, interpretive conclusions, and outside resources.
Readers are encouraged to check the study against the passage, consult reliable references, and seek the guidance of trusted pastors and teachers.
Connections to Trusted Study Resources
Passage Lens can guide readers to additional resources related to the passage, including:
- Enduring Word Bible Commentary
- Blue Letter Bible study tools
- Articles and studies from Hank’s Bible Study
- Relevant Letters From Home resources
- Additional cross-references and study material
These links make Passage Lens a starting point for further investigation rather than the final word on a passage.
Reflection and Application
Bible study is about more than gathering information. Scripture calls us to respond.
Passage Lens provides space for personal reflection and application. It can help you consider questions such as:
- What does this passage reveal about God?
- What does it reveal about people?
- Is there a truth to believe?
- Is there a command to obey?
- Is there an example to follow or avoid?
- Is there a promise to remember?
- How should this passage affect my attitudes, relationships, decisions, or worship?
- What question do I still need to explore?
Your reflections can become part of your ongoing Study Journey.
Build a Continuing Study Journey
Passage Lens is not limited to producing one-time reports. You can save and organize studies so that they become part of a continuing record of what you have been learning.
The Study Journey can help you:
- Search previous studies.
- Organize studies by passage, subject, or theme.
- Create study series and reading plans.
- Record observations and reflections.
- Revisit important passages.
- Receive reminders to return to a study.
- See connections among recurring personal themes.
- Create a monthly “What I’ve Been Learning” summary.
- Continue your journey across devices when signed in.
Instead of losing insights in scattered notes, screenshots, and browser tabs, you can gradually develop a searchable collection of your Bible studies.
Study Together
Passage Lens also supports Study Groups.
A group can be created for a Sunday school class, small group, family, ministry team, or gathering of friends. The group owner can send an invitation link to other participants, who can then view and contribute studies.
Members can explore the same passage, share discoveries, and build a common study library while retaining space for their own reflections.
The purpose is not to replace face-to-face discussion. It is to give the group a shared place to prepare, collect questions, preserve insights, and continue the conversation between meetings.
Export and Share Your Work
Studies can be exported for use outside the application. This makes it easier to save a report locally, move it into Google Docs, prepare a lesson, create a handout, or share material with a Bible study group.
A Passage Lens report can become the beginning of a personal study, teaching outline, discussion guide, or group conversation.
What Passage Lens Is—and What It Is Not
Passage Lens is not intended to become another mobile Bible-reading application.
It is also not meant to replace:
- Your personal Bible
- Prayerful reading and meditation
- The work of the Holy Spirit
- Participation in a local church
- Trusted pastors and teachers
- Careful study using reliable resources
- Conversation with other believers
Passage Lens is a supplemental study tool. Its purpose is to help you ask better questions, discover useful background, find meaningful connections, and then return to the Bible with greater understanding and attention.
The best way to use Passage Lens is simple:
Read the Bible. Use Passage Lens to explore. Then return to Scripture with deeper understanding and fresh attention.
A Responsible Approach to AI-Assisted Bible Study
Passage Lens uses artificial intelligence to help identify passages, organize information, generate explanations, and suggest possible connections.
AI can be helpful, but it can also make mistakes. A generated study should never be accepted uncritically simply because it sounds confident or complete.
Users should verify Scripture references, examine conclusions in context, consult dependable sources, and discuss important interpretive questions with mature Christian teachers.
Passage Lens is a study assistant—not a pastor, theologian, or spiritual authority.
Try Passage Lens
Passage Lens began with a straightforward idea: What if your phone could help you investigate a passage without pulling you away from your physical Bible?
That idea has grown into a study companion offering passage recognition, contextual analysis, word studies, cross-references, maps, timelines, translation comparisons, personal reflection, study organization, group sharing, and much more.
We are continuing to improve the application and would value feedback from Bible readers, teachers, group leaders, and students.
