Saved: What Sōzō Actually Means

The word saved is translated from the Greek word Sozo

†σώζω sṓzō, sode’-zo; from a primary σῶς sōs (contraction for obsolete σάος sáos, “safe”); to save, i.e. deliver or protect (literally or figuratively):—heal, preserve, save (self), do well, be (make) whole.

When the Bible says “saved”, read it as SAVED, HEALED, DELIVERED, DO WELL, AND BE MADE WHOLE.

Sozo: Saved From Sin (Justification)

Key Scriptures:

  • Matthew 1:21 – “He will save (sozo) His people from their sins.”
  • Luke 19:10 – “The Son of Man came to seek and to save (sozo) that which was lost.”
  • Romans 10:9–10 – Confessing and believing to be saved (sozo).
  • Sozo begins with forgiveness and rescue from judgment.
  • Faith response: repent, believe, confess.

Sozo: Healed in Body (Divine Healing)

Key Scriptures:

  • Mark 5:25–34 – Woman with the issue of blood.
    • “Daughter, your faith has made you well (sozo); go in peace and be healed of your affliction.”
  • Mark 10:46–52 – Blind Bartimaeus.
    • “Your faith has made you well (sozo).”
    • Sozo is used for physical healing.
    • Healing is part of the atonement.
      • Connects to Isaiah 53:4–5 and Matthew 8:16–17: He took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.
      • At the cross, Jesus dealt with both sin and sickness.
    • Faith and the touch of Jesus.
  •  Sozo: Delivered From Demons (Freedom)
  • Key Scripture:
  • Luke 8:26–39 – The Gerasene demoniac.
    • Verse 36 (many translations): the man who had been demon-possessed was “healed” or “made well” (sozo).
  • Sozo includes deliverance from evil spirits.
    • The same Jesus who forgives sins and heals diseases also casts out demons.
    • Salvation brings a change of kingdom—out of the authority of darkness into the kingdom of Christ.
  • The fruit of deliverance: a sound mind and restored identity.
    • The man is seated, clothed, and in his right mind.
    • Restoration of dignity and purpose (Jesus sends him back to testify).
  • Authority of the believer.

 Sozo: Delivered From Demons (Freedom)

Key Scripture:

  • Luke 8:26–39 – The Gerasene demoniac.
    • Verse 36 (many translations): the man who had been demon-possessed was “healed” or “made well” (sozo).

Sozo includes deliverance from evil spirits.

  • The same Jesus who forgives sins and heals diseases also casts out demons.
  • Salvation brings a change of kingdom—out of the authority of darkness into the kingdom of Christ.
  1. The fruit of deliverance: a sound mind and restored identity.
    • The man is seated, clothed, and in his right mind.
    • Restoration of dignity and purpose (Jesus sends him back to testify).
  2. Authority of the believer.
    • In Christ, believers have authority over demonic powers (Mark 16:17; Luke 10:19).
    • Deliverance is not a side issue; it is part of the full gospel.

Sozo: Made Whole in Every Dimension

Key Scriptures:

  • Mark 5:34 again – “Your faith has made you well (sozo); go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.” Note “peace” plus “healed.”
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:23 – Spirit, soul, and body preserved blameless.
  • John 10:10 – Life more abundantly.

Jesus restores wholeness, not just fixes parts.

  • Wholeness includes:
    • Spirit: reconciled to God.
    • Soul: mind, will, emotions healed and renewed.
    • Body: strength, health, and vitality.
  • Sozo is God’s project of restoring what sin, sickness, and Satan have broken.
  1. Ongoing process as well as a completed work.
    • At the cross, Jesus finished the work; in life, the Holy Spirit applies it.
    • There is a once‑for‑all salvation, and there is also a daily walking out of healing, freedom, and maturity.
  2. Community as a context for wholeness.
    • The early church lived out salvation together—confession, prayer, shared life, mutual care.
    • Encourage small groups, confession, accountability, and mutual ministry as part of staying “whole.”

This is a small sample of scriptures where Sozo is used. Meditate on these

[Mat 1:21 NKJV] 21 “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.”

[Mat 8:25 NKJV] 25 Then His disciples came to [Him] and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”

[Mat 9:21-22 NKJV] 21 For she said to herself, “If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.” 22 But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, “Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour.

[Mat 10:22 NKJV] 22 “And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.

[Mat 14:30 NKJV] 30 But when he saw that the wind [was] boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”

[Mat 18:11 NKJV] 11 “For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.

[Mat 24:13 NKJV] 13 “But he who endures to the end shall be saved.

[Mar 8:35 NKJV] 35 “For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.

[Luk 7:50 NKJV] 50 Then He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”

[Luk 17:19 NKJV] 19 And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.”

[Luk 18:42 NKJV] 42 Then Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has made you well.”

[Act 2:21, 40, 47 NKJV] 21 And it shall come to pass [That] whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved.’ … 40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.” … 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

[Act 4:12 NKJV] 12 “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

[Act 11:14 NKJV] 14 ‘who will tell you words by which you and all your household will be saved.’

[Act 15:11 NKJV] 11 “But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved in the same manner as they.”

[Act 16:30-31 NKJV] 30 And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

[Rom 5:9-10 NKJV] 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. 10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

[Rom 10:9 NKJV] 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

[1Co 1:18, 21 NKJV] 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. … 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.

[Eph 2:8 NKJV] 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; [it is] the gift of God,

[1Ti 1:15 NKJV] 15 This [is] a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.

[1Ti 4:16 NKJV] 16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

[Heb 7:25 NKJV] 25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

[Jas 4:12 NKJV] 12 There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another?

[Jas 5:15, 20 NKJV] 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. … 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.

[Jde 1:5 NKJV] 5 But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.

[Rev 21:24 NKJV] 24 And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it.

The Believer’s Creed

I believe in the eternal God—
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—
One in essence, infinite in glory,
the Maker of heaven and earth,
whose wisdom shaped all things seen and unseen.

I believe in Jesus Christ,
the only begotten Son of God,
conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
holy and humble, yet Lord of all.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
He descended into the depths of hell,
and on the third day He rose victorious.
He ascended into heaven,
and now reigns at the right hand of the Father,
from where He will come again
to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the breath and power of God within us,
who gives life, convicts hearts, and sustains faith.
Through the Spirit, the Church is made holy,
a communion of saints across all generations.
I believe in the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting in the presence of God.

I believe in the sacred mystery of the Trinity—
not three gods, but one holy unity:
Father, Son, and Spirit—eternal, unchanging, divine.

I believe in the sacred story revealed in Scripture:
that from the beginning, light has warred against darkness,
and though the enemy rose in pride,
God’s promise prevailed through the Seed—
Christ Jesus, born of a woman,
who triumphed through His cross and empty tomb.

I believe salvation is a gift of grace—
received by faith, sealed by repentance,
and made real through the transforming love of God.

I believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God,
a lamp for our path and truth for every soul.

I believe in the call of baptism—
a burial of the old, a rising to new life in Christ.

I believe the Holy Spirit empowers believers
with gifts of healing, wisdom, and tongues,
that we may glorify God and serve the world in love.

I believe in divine healing,
for the power that raised Christ from the grave
still moves with mercy among His people.

The Believer’s Charge

We believe that we are called and anointed—
not as spectators, but as servants of the living God.
We are His witnesses in all the earth,
ambassadors of reconciliation and bearers of His light.

We believe that Christ has commissioned us
to go into the world and proclaim His gospel,
to speak truth to the lost and hope to the broken,
to open blind eyes and set captives free.
In His name we move without fear,
for the Spirit goes before us with power and signs.

We believe the promise of our Lord:
that these signs will follow those who believe—
we shall cast out demons in His name,
speak with new tongues of heavenly fire,
lay hands upon the sick and see them restored,
tread upon the works of the enemy,
and walk in the authority of the risen Christ.

We believe that the Spirit within us
confirms the Word with power and grace—
that we are vessels of His love,
agents of His mercy,
and temples of His presence.

We choose to live as those sent by God,
our hearts aflame with His gospel,
our hands ready to serve,
our voices lifted in praise,
our lives poured out for His glory.

The Blessed Hope

I believe in the glorious return of Jesus Christ,
who will restore all things
and reign in righteousness and peace.

And I believe in eternal life—
the home prepared for the redeemed,
and the solemn truth of judgment for the unrepentant.

This is our faith, our confession, our calling, and our hope.
To God be the glory—forever and ever.
Amen.
