In the Levant, Baal Hadad was the primary storm and fertility god of the Canaanites, Phoenicians, and Ugaritic peoples.
Revered as a life-giver who brought rain and defeated chaotic forces like Yam (the sea) and Mot (death), Baal’s myths mirrored broader Near Eastern themes of cosmic order triumphing over chaos.
His worship was widespread, with temples in cities like Ugarit and Megiddo, and high places (bamot) used for rituals, including offerings and possibly ecstatic or fertility-related performances.
In the Hebrew Bible, Baal became a symbol of idolatry and spiritual corruption, particularly in conflicts with the God of Israel, such as the confrontation between Elijah and the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel.
