Review: NKJV Chronological Study Bible (Thomas Nelson)

A Fresh Perspective on God’s Unfolding Story

After years of teaching Bible studies and working through Scripture in traditional canonical order, I approached the NKJV Chronological Study Bible with both anticipation and curiosity. What I discovered was a resource that genuinely transformed how I experience the biblical narrative—not by changing the text, but by revealing connections I had missed for decades.

The Power of Chronological Arrangement

The central premise of this Bible is deceptively simple: present Scripture in the order events actually occurred. In practice, this creates something remarkable. Reading the prophets alongside the historical narratives they addressed suddenly illuminates their urgency and purpose. Isaiah’s warnings gain weight when you’re simultaneously walking through the political turmoil of Judah’s monarchy. Jeremiah’s tears make sense when you’ve just witnessed the spiritual decline that prompted them.

The editors divide biblical history into nine epochs, from the Patriarchs through the Church Age. This framework provides natural stopping points for reflection while maintaining narrative momentum. Rather than feeling like you’re reading sixty-six separate books, you experience one continuous story—which, of course, is exactly what Scripture is.

The blended Gospel presentation deserves special mention. Rather than reading Matthew, then Mark, then Luke, then John separately, the accounts are woven together chronologically. You’ll read one Gospel’s account of an event immediately followed by the parallel passages from the others. For anyone who has struggled to mentally harmonize the Gospels, this approach is revelatory.

Translation Quality

The New King James Version strikes an excellent balance between the literary beauty of the King James tradition and modern readability. The translators maintained the reverent cadence many of us grew up with while updating archaic vocabulary and syntax. The 9.5-point Comfort Print makes extended reading sessions genuinely comfortable—no squinting required.

For those accustomed to more dynamic translations, the NKJV’s formal equivalence approach may initially feel less conversational. However, for serious study, this literal translation philosophy proves invaluable, preserving the structure and nuance of the original languages.

Study Resources and Visual Elements

This is where the Chronological Study Bible distinguishes itself from competitors. The full-color presentation throughout is stunning—not merely decorative, but genuinely educational. Period photographs of archaeological sites, detailed maps, artistic reconstructions of ancient architecture, and informative charts appear on nearly every spread.

The articles covering daily life, cultural practices, geography, and historical context bring the ancient world alive. Want to understand what a first-century fishing operation actually looked like? How ancient grain harvests worked? The political dynamics between Rome and its client kingdoms? These articles deliver substantive information without overwhelming the biblical text.

The Time Panels deserve particular praise. Tracking the divided monarchy period can confuse even experienced students—which king of Israel reigned alongside which king of Judah? The parallel timelines make these relationships immediately clear.

One important clarification: this is not a verse-by-verse commentary Bible. The study notes focus on historical context, cultural background, and literary connections rather than theological exposition of individual passages. Some reviewers have expressed disappointment expecting the former when the Bible delivers the latter. Know what you’re purchasing: this is a historical-contextual study Bible, and it excels at that purpose.

Practical Considerations

The binding quality reflects Thomas Nelson’s reputation. The Leathersoft cover is attractive and durable, though serious users may want to consider the genuine leather option for longevity. A single ribbon marker is included—I’d personally prefer two or three given how often you’ll want to mark multiple locations.

The concordance and Scripture index in the back matter are essential for this format. Since books are distributed throughout rather than appearing in canonical order, you’ll need these tools to locate specific passages. The reading plans for one-year and two-year completion are thoughtfully designed.

One critical note: This Bible is not designed for quick reference lookups. If you need to find Psalm 23 in thirty seconds for a Sunday school class, this isn’t your tool. The chronological arrangement means familiar books appear in unexpected locations. This is a Bible for immersive study and reading, not rapid navigation.

Who Should Consider This Bible?

This resource serves multiple audiences exceptionally well:

New believers will find the continuous narrative far more accessible than jumping between books in canonical order. The contextual notes answer questions as they arise naturally.

Seasoned students who feel they’ve “read it all before” will discover fresh connections and a renewed sense of discovery. Seeing familiar passages in chronological context reveals dimensions easily missed in traditional arrangements.

Teachers and group leaders will find the historical articles and visual resources invaluable for lesson preparation. The epoch divisions provide natural curriculum structures.

Anyone who has started and stopped reading through the Bible will appreciate how the chronological flow maintains engagement and momentum.

Minor Limitations

The objective, textbook-style presentation of historical and cultural information—while I consider it a strength—may not satisfy readers who want devotional application or theological commentary integrated throughout. Pair this Bible with a good systematic commentary if that’s your need.

Additionally, some date references align with conventional scholarly dating rather than strictly biblical chronology. The editors acknowledge this and present biblical timelines separately, but readers with strong convictions about specific dating should be aware.

Final Verdict

The NKJV Chronological Study Bible has earned a permanent place in my study rotation. It accomplishes something genuinely difficult: presenting the familiar in an unfamiliar way that deepens rather than distracts. After teaching Bible studies for years, I thought I understood how the pieces fit together. This Bible showed me connections I had never seen.

For anyone serious about understanding Scripture as a unified narrative—God’s unfolding plan of redemption from Genesis through Revelation—this resource is not merely helpful but essential. The investment is modest; the return is substantial.

Rating: Highly Recommended

Best suited for: Immersive reading, historical-contextual study, teaching preparation, reading the Bible through in one or two years

Less suited for: Quick reference, verse-by-verse theological commentary, traditional canonical study

The Believer’s Creed

I believe in the eternal God—
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—
One in essence, infinite in glory,
the Maker of heaven and earth,
whose wisdom shaped all things seen and unseen.

I believe in Jesus Christ,
the only begotten Son of God,
conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
holy and humble, yet Lord of all.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
He descended into the depths of hell,
and on the third day He rose victorious.
He ascended into heaven,
and now reigns at the right hand of the Father,
from where He will come again
to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the breath and power of God within us,
who gives life, convicts hearts, and sustains faith.
Through the Spirit, the Church is made holy,
a communion of saints across all generations.
I believe in the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting in the presence of God.

I believe in the sacred mystery of the Trinity—
not three gods, but one holy unity:
Father, Son, and Spirit—eternal, unchanging, divine.

I believe in the sacred story revealed in Scripture:
that from the beginning, light has warred against darkness,
and though the enemy rose in pride,
God’s promise prevailed through the Seed—
Christ Jesus, born of a woman,
who triumphed through His cross and empty tomb.

I believe salvation is a gift of grace—
received by faith, sealed by repentance,
and made real through the transforming love of God.

I believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God,
a lamp for our path and truth for every soul.

I believe in the call of baptism—
a burial of the old, a rising to new life in Christ.

I believe the Holy Spirit empowers believers
with gifts of healing, wisdom, and tongues,
that we may glorify God and serve the world in love.

I believe in divine healing,
for the power that raised Christ from the grave
still moves with mercy among His people.

The Believer’s Charge

We believe that we are called and anointed—
not as spectators, but as servants of the living God.
We are His witnesses in all the earth,
ambassadors of reconciliation and bearers of His light.

We believe that Christ has commissioned us
to go into the world and proclaim His gospel,
to speak truth to the lost and hope to the broken,
to open blind eyes and set captives free.
In His name we move without fear,
for the Spirit goes before us with power and signs.

We believe the promise of our Lord:
that these signs will follow those who believe—
we shall cast out demons in His name,
speak with new tongues of heavenly fire,
lay hands upon the sick and see them restored,
tread upon the works of the enemy,
and walk in the authority of the risen Christ.

We believe that the Spirit within us
confirms the Word with power and grace—
that we are vessels of His love,
agents of His mercy,
and temples of His presence.

We choose to live as those sent by God,
our hearts aflame with His gospel,
our hands ready to serve,
our voices lifted in praise,
our lives poured out for His glory.

The Blessed Hope

I believe in the glorious return of Jesus Christ,
who will restore all things
and reign in righteousness and peace.

And I believe in eternal life—
the home prepared for the redeemed,
and the solemn truth of judgment for the unrepentant.

This is our faith, our confession, our calling, and our hope.
To God be the glory—forever and ever.
Amen.
